Cooper: Diane, last night I dreamed I was eating a large, tasteless gumdrop, and awoke to discover I was chewing on one of my foam disposable earplugs. Perhaps I should consider moderating my nighttime coffee consumption.

Wallace Bowl, 29 Jun 2006I'm counting 3 more rehearsals before opening night. Lock 'n' load. Plus there's that preview during the 4th of July celebration (on the 3rd). It's all coming up quick. Good rehearsal tonight? Don't ask me. I can't tell the good from the bad. But we're a week away from opening night and no rehearsals Friday or Saturday. (None Monday either, but that's more a result of the facility being unavailable.) Who can interpret the signs? Come the dawn. Quoth the raven.

Wallace Bowl, 28 Jun 2006
The Bowl was looking good tonight -- until the rains came, about an hour into act one. I would have guessed we'd move inside somewhere and continue, but once everything was packed up and put away -- mostly before the actual rain started falling -- rehearsal was over for the night. Below is the orchestra section, out in the park for the first time tonight.

Whoa. I switched my camera from auto to manual. I don't really know what make for good whiteness and ev settings, but this picture -- I think -- came out so much better than the others I've been taking.

Wallace Bowl, 26 Jun 2006There's a noticeable change in today's on-set picture. It's getting close. One week away is the preview at the 4th of July celebration (on the 3rd). That's when we'll be doing the "Kansas City" song and dance to promote the show which starts a few days after that. Ooh. We made it through the whole show, start to finish, in less than 3 hours tonight. That's something. Actually, it really is.

So sleepy

Wallace Bowl, 22 Jun 2006Now that rehearsals have stretched out to 11 (or so), it makes for some very sleepy days. I'm well rested after the weekend, though, ready no doubt to begin a repeat of last week starting tomorrow. Last week included 3 nights of 5 hours sleep and one of 4. Why one less hour that night? That's the night I ran over something on the expressway that ripped some panel underneath the engine compartment away from its attachment to the frame. I don't know what it was -- small enough to not hit the bumper, but too big to pass cleanly under me. This part was bolted on and keeps things like gravel from bouncing up into the engine or whatever else is important under there. And after it was ripped loose, I couldn't go more than 25 mph without it bending down and scraping the road. I had the brilliant idea of trying to tie it up, but I didn't have anything like string or twine or rope. I stopped at a gas station and they didn't have anything either. That left me with a much longer drive than usual. Made even longer when a cop pulled me over. I told him why I was going slow and had my hazards on and he let me go. I was able to tie it up with some twine to the grill when I got home. I was even more amazed when it held up during my drive to work the next day. I suppose I could have left it tied up, like some hillbilly, but no, I left it to get repaired at great expense. It's never a simple repair. I believe they're replacing the bumper or something bumper related, where this thing gets attached to the car. Good as new, it better be.

Wallace Bowl, 21 Jun 2006We almost made it through act 2 tonight. Almost. But there was a lot of extra singing and dance (and dance and dance and dance) practice before we started running the act, so it can be explained away. Notice in the picture that the structure in the middle has blades now. That's a windmill. And a breeze gets those blades spinning.

We got through act one tonight. Based on my limited experience, I'd say that's pretty good with a little over two weeks to go before opening night. Especially for a 30 person cast. With tons of choreography and singing.Wallace Bowl, 20 Jun 2006

Wallace Bowl, 19 Jun 2006Whew. Rehearsal went until 11:15 tonight. I would say, sweet -- if I didn't have to get up for work in the morning. You know what? I'll say it anyway. Sweet! When it comes to doing something you like, too much is never enough. Here's what the set looked like around 7 pm today (well, the 19th). It's basically the same as Thursday, but a slightly different configuration of the buildings for a different scene.

Movies

I saw "Batman Begins" today. Pretty good movie. The scenes shot in Waukegan, for which the extras were paid for 3 nights (39 hours), lasted less than 15 seconds. And I'd say it was less than 5 seconds where you could actually see the cars driven by the extras going the opposite direction of the batmobile. Probably about half a dozen were visible, out of the 60 that were out there. I'm sure the cost of those 3 nights was insignificant in the big picture, but still, multiply that by hundreds of others, and it's pretty easy to see why your movie's budget has no problem getting to 9 figures.

Wallace Bowl, 15 Jun 2006This is how the Wallace Bowl at Gilllson Park is looking as of June 15th. In less than 3 weeks, "Oklahoma!" opens there. We just started rehearsing at the site this week. When I first got there, it was like, whoa, this is familiar. I'm pretty sure I was there 30 years ago when I came to Chicago to visit my uncle for a week. I found my brochures and ticket stubs and I even had a piece of paper where I'd typed out things I'd seen or done. It would have been a free concert, so I didn't expect to find a program, but I didn't mention it on the piece of paper, even though I included things like "Lake Shore Drive". Even so, I feel pretty confident I was there one evening in 1975.

Science

It's like living in the not too distant future. They tried to deliver my new phone yesterday (a Nokia; how you like me now, Motorola!) but a signature's required so I called the UPS today. Fortunately most deliveries are just left on the porch, so it's been a while since I had to do this. The whole set-up is voice activated. And it actually understood when I read the 10 digit number and when I said "arrange for pickup". Only once did it start to be a comedy routine when I said, "no" and the voice said, "I'm sorry, I didn't understand that." And I had to repeat it a couple times. But mostly I was amazed that I went through the whole procedure of getting them to stop trying to deliver it and let me pick it up without talking to a person or pressing any buttons. Now if there were only some way to get all deliveries without requiring a signature....

Health

The ERCP experience (feel free to use that for your next band name) was much better than I expected. A lot of what I read about it didn't apply because, at least at this hospital, they really do sedate you. I wasn't just sleepy or groggy. I was out. At least far enough out that I didn't wake up when they put the tube down my throat. Or even have any awareness of it. (Unless they also threw in some of those amnesia drugs. But no one ever said anything about that. Or maybe I just ... forgot about it!) I don't even remember any sense of drifting off. I was there in the room with the doctor, the anesthesiologist, and a couple of nurses, then the next thing I knew I was in the recovery room, like an hour later. The worst of it actually came a few hours later at home, when I started having these upper abdominal pains -- ack, that's what they warned me about, the thing that happens in 5% of patients requiring a few days in the hospital to let things settle down. Again I went back to the age-old question: how bad does it have to be before you call someone. It woke me up a couple times during the night, but I toughed it out and everything seems fine today. And the doctor found no evidence of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis -- so I've got that going for me. (On the other hand, that means they still haven't found anything wrong. But what can you do.)

Everyone likes to hear people talk about medical procedures, right? Of course they do. This is it. Tomorrow I'm having an ERCP. Big fun. It's not really like Katie Couric's scope adventure. It actually sounds worse to me. But you'll have to ask me after tomorrow. One cool thing about this is the prep. Basically nothing! (Unlike many tests of this nature, where the prep is as bad as the procedure.) It's just nothing by mouth for 8 hours. Shoot, I can do that without even realizing it. I'm just hoping the drugs they give you are strong enough. Of course, I won't be able to get them from my local, mom & pop pharmacy.

Mystery

It amazes me how small businesses can stay in business. I've been having trouble getting the mail order pharmacy to send me my "good stuff". It's actually been over a month, long enough for my usual excess supply to completely run out and I haven't gotten them straightened out yet. So I got my doctor to phone in a prescription to a local place so I could get some right away. The danged mail order takes two weeks -- whether they ship something or just send a letter saying there was some kind of problem. All the chain drug stores said they didn't have my stuff. Rosemont Pharmacy said the same thing, but that guy volunteered that he could get some by the next day. I would assume they all use the same distributors, but he was the only one who offered. So I said, Deal! I went in there and it just seemed so small and cramped and there was one guy working and I was the only customer. I don't know how they compete when there's a CVS or Walgreens on every corner -- literally, it seems like. I wouldn't mind getting all my prescriptions there. It's convenient. And I'd feel like I'm supporting a small businessman. I'd get the same drugs either way. Without the hassle sometimes involved with the faceless mail order behemoth. Of course, the insurance company says I can only use the mail order place. (And they don't even provide any choices. There's one option.) If I started trying to get refills locally they'd start rejecting payment. And as much as I'd like to help out, I'm not going to pay the full price myself when I don't have to. Otherwise why bother paying for the insurance. That kind of restriction must take a huge bite out of small drug stores. Which is sad. And leaves me wondering how any of them survive.
