Cooper: Diane, last night I dreamed I was eating a large, tasteless gumdrop, and awoke to discover I was chewing on one of my foam disposable earplugs. Perhaps I should consider moderating my nighttime coffee consumption.

Cary Grant

"Notorious" is another of the four Hitchcock movies Cary Grant did and the first of two movies with Ingrid Bergman. It came out only a year after WWII ended, and was all about Nazis plotting in South America. It's a nice, suspenseful spy/love story. But you don't need me to tell you that. I'd guess it's as well known as any on the Cary Grant Project list so far, excepting perhaps the other Hitchcock film.

1. "The Philadelphia Story", 1940, also starring Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart
2. "North By Northwest", 1959, also starring Eva Marie Saint and James Mason
3. "The Pride And The Passion", 1957, also starring Frank Sinatra and Sophia Loren
4. "I Was A Male War Bride", 1949, also starring Ann Sheridan
5. "Monkey Business", 1952, also starring Ginger Rogers
6. "Houseboat", 1958, also starring Sophia Loren
7. "Arsenic And Old Lace", 1944, also starring Raymond Massey
8. "People Will Talk", 1951, also starring Hume Cronyn
9. "Notorious", 1946, also starring Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains

Cary Grant

Here's another movie based on a play, as they so often were way back when. More drama than comedy, but quirky in its way, Cary Grant is a doctor with a mysterious past in "People Will Talk". There's an older gentleman who apparently lives with him and is nearby day and night. And he falls for a student who's -- gasp -- found herself in a family way without the benefit of a husband. Hume Cronyn is another doctor at the medical school who, apparently out of petty jealousy of Cary Grant's success and popularity, tries to dig up details about his current relationships and past activities.

1. "The Philadelphia Story", 1940, also starring Katharine Hepburn & James Stewart
2. "North By Northwest", 1959, also starring Eva Marie Saint & James Mason
3. "The Pride And The Passion", 1957, also starring Frank Sinatra and Sophia Loren
4. "I Was A Male War Bride", 1949, also starring Ann Sheridan
5. "Monkey Business", 1952, also starring Ginger Rogers
6. "Houseboat", 1958, also starring Sophia Loren
7. "Arsenic And Old Lace", 1944, also starring Raymond Massey
8. "People Will Talk", 1951, also starring Hume Cronyn

Cary Grant

Continuing with the Cary Grant Project, tonight I saw "Arsenic And Old Lace", a community theater favorite. This is the one with a couple old ladies who kill lonely old gentlemen as an act of mercy. They've got 3 nephews: a psychopath, a guy who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt, and the normal one played by Cary Grant. It's all kind of over-the-top and farcical, in a way that you'd expect of a movie based on a play. What I kept thinking throughout the show was how much Cary Grant's part seemed like a Jimmy Stewart role. Bully!

Cary Grant

Today I saw the other movie Cary Grant was in with Sophia Loren (30 years his junior). In "Houseboat", he returns to take charge of his 3 kids after his estranged (but not yet divorced) wife dies. A series of events leads to them living on a houseboat (which doesn't actually appear until 40 minutes into the movie) with Sophia Loren as their maid. And then the zany fun really begins.

1. "The Philadelphia Story", 1940, also starring Katharine Hepburn & James Stewart
2. "North By Northwest", 1959, also starring Eva Marie Saint & James Mason

Theater

Let's update the old audition chart. I finally went back to Deerfield, 4 years after my first attempt. And I must like "Bye Bye Birdie", auditioning for it less than two years after I was in it. But I think it's pretty unlikely I'll be in it a second time. There must have been 8 or 10 guys there tonight, and I'd cast most of them before me. And there's another night of auditions tomorrow. Of course, I pretty much guaranteed I'd not be cast by saying I was only interested in Harry MacAfee or Alberto. Realistically, it is in Deerfield, over 20 miles away, so I figure the part has to be worth the effort. And since I've already played Harry, I can't see accepting anything less. All of which means, I should be available to audition for Beauty & The Beast (I mean, Disney's Beauty & The Beast) in a couple weeks! Hmm. I don't really see me as a candelabra....

Color me amazed. Last night's pull-through (or brush-up, or whatever you call the midweek rehearsal between performance weekends) was run through pretty much like a regular show. No speeding through the lines, no joking around, no pranks. I loved it. With all the shows I've done, that must have happened before at least once -- but I certainly don't remember it ever happening. BTW, the final weekend of "Sly Fox" starts in 5, 4, 3, 2....

Cary Grant

Hey, it's another Howard Hawks directed Cary Grant movie! This one, "Monkey Business" has more of the witty dialogue I'd expect. Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers are a married couple who drink a formula that makes them act younger. I never really like adults acting like little kids -- yeah, that's hilarious. But the rest of the movie, including when they're acting like teenagers, is pretty good. Marilyn Monroe seems to get billed as one of the stars, but her part is really pretty small. She does wear some very nice sweaters, though.

As of today, my Cary Grant Project total is at five:
