Cooper: Diane, last night I dreamed I was eating a large, tasteless gumdrop, and awoke to discover I was chewing on one of my foam disposable earplugs. Perhaps I should consider moderating my nighttime coffee consumption.

Theater

It would seem that each performance of "Bye Bye Birdie" is better than the last. Everyone who's been holding off until this Sunday's final show is looking pretty clever now. At least, I hope they keep getting better. But let's face it. I can't really tell. I don't feel that rush of being in a great show at the end of the night. But every night might just have been the amusing and entertaining experience that the audiences and the rest of the cast seem to believe each night to have been. Is it possible that the whole world has become delusional and I'm the only one sane? Could I simply have lost the ability to enjoy what everyone thinks is so obviously easy to enjoy? Perhaps, rabbit. Perhaps. Could I have lost the ability to enjoy anything? Drink deep from the well of understanding. For tomorrow it may be raining blood. Forsooth.

Theater

It's audition time again. I've missed several recent audition potentials, since I'm already in "Bye Bye Birdie". It seems as if we're at the tail end of an audition cycle. I went to the audition for "Enchanted Sleeping Beauty" tonight, a children's musical. After that there are only one or two others I see on my horizon -- unlike late last summer when I was able to bounce from one to another until eventually hitting one where I got cast. I try to keep my eyes open, but sometimes I have to wonder how some of these theaters get anyone to show up, since it can require some effort to find out about their auditions and performances. I make the best effort I can, but it's probably more research work than many people are willing to put in.

Ghost Rider

Wow, the Nicolas Cage "Ghost Rider" movie opens today. I've got a bit of a Ghost Rider collection -- certainly more than another other comics character. Of course, the movie is about the original Ghost Rider from the '70s, Johnny Blaze. Some of those issues are pretty rare and valuable. As you may guess, I was unaware of Ghost Rider then and have none of them. Hey, it's a pretty dark comic. How old do you think I am, anyway?

I discovered it in the 90s, when Marvel reintroduced the title, this time with Danny Ketch becoming Ghost Rider. I have every issue from that run (-1 and 1-93), plus a fair amount of other titles: I tried to pick up the complete story whenever any Ghost Rider tales were in multiple parts spread across different comics. I've also got some (most?) of the one-issue deals, such as #1 and #2 of the Ghost Rider Annual; also Crossroads, Fear (with Captain America), Hearts of Darkness (with Wolverine and Punisher), and The Dark Design. I don't have any t-shirts or posters (well, the "Ghost Rider Poster Magazine", but only a kid would rip out those pages and tape them to the wall, or even think of them as "posters"). I do have a Ghost Rider bandana. And a couple 5" action figures (Ghost Rider and one of his enemies). And a 12" vinyl model kit that I have never gotten around to assembling. I thought sometime I'd get me some model glue and paints and it would be a little project. It'll probably still be on my to-do list when I die.

So what I'm saying is that I really like this spirt of vengeance known as Ghost Rider. Giving bad guys his penance stare. (Technically, I don't know if he did that in the '70s.) Riding around on a motorcycle with wheels of fire. Which is a good match for his flaming head.

Remember "Nightly Vengeance" from Oh, Cursed Fate!?

Theater

"Bye Bye Birdie" opens next Friday at the Round Lake Senior High School. Shows at 7:30 on the 16th, 17th, 23rd, and 24th. Plus one 2:00 show on the 25th. $7 at the door.

I put together this list of references in the show. You'd be surprised, as short as it is, at how long it took to create.
