Cooper: Diane, last night I dreamed I was eating a large, tasteless gumdrop, and awoke to discover I was chewing on one of my foam disposable earplugs. Perhaps I should consider moderating my nighttime coffee consumption.

Theater

This year's version of "The Nutcracker" is almost here -- presented by the Round Lake Area Park District Dance Studio. (As usual, the serious dancing begins around the time I exit stage left.) At the Round Lake High School, we'll have the following performances, with me again as Drosselmeyer:

Nov. 30th -- 7:30 pm
Dec. 1st -- 2 pm & 7:30 pm
Dec. 2nd -- 7:30 pm

And coming in January/February, I'll be in "Rapunzel". This one is seriously for the little kids. It's the non-musical version of "Let Your Hair Down, Rapunzel", which I was in three and a half years ago. This time I'm playing Walt, the father of Rapunzel. The father!

Theater

Today is the day I start rehearsing for "The Nutcracker". The dancers have been at it a while, of course; after all, the show opens Nov 30th. But, as Drosselmeyer, I'm far from being a dancer. Now that it's starting, I finally got motivated to update my database with the "Odd Couple" cast info.

It's a really simple database, with tables for Cast, People, Shows, and Theaters, that basically tracks all the shows I've been in and the casts in those shows. And I've created some really simple queries for my really simple database. They allow me to quickly see that:

  • "The Nutcracker" (2005 version) had the largest cast (55) and "Butterflies Are Free" had the smallest (4).
  • Ten different people have been in 5 or more shows with me; one of them has shared the stage with me 9 times.
  • Although I've done shows with 6 different groups, 14 of my 22 shows have been with the Round Lake Area Park District Community Theater.

    Working

I'm not bonkers for blogs, but there are a couple that I read fairly regularly. Scott Adams, (the "Dilbert" guy) has one that he updates almost every day with relatively lengthy commentary on a wide variety of whatever pops into his head. Lately he's been using a lot of his entries to flog his latest book, including today's, which nonetheless had this interesting quote from someone who should know, since he kept his day job for 6 years after "Dilbert" became a daily strip.

It turns out that as soon as you don’t need to be working for financial reasons, the stress of your job dissolves, and it starts feeling a lot like a hobby.

OK, the groups are essentially the same, but here are some mp3's that look to be accessible even if you haven't created an account:

    Coffee

Would you like some coffee? Why, yes, thank you very much.

(It's too much trouble to try to separate the video out from amazon's web page. Just click play when you get there.)
