Cooper: Diane, last night I dreamed I was eating a large, tasteless gumdrop, and awoke to discover I was chewing on one of my foam disposable earplugs. Perhaps I should consider moderating my nighttime coffee consumption.

04/09/2008: "Math"

Yesterday, one of the kids in "Peter Pan" walked by and asked me if I knew the formula for the area of a scalene triangle. Before I could scratch my chin and say, "Hmm. Isn't the formula for the area of a triangle the same for all triangles, 1/2 * base * height? What's with the scalene qualifier?" -- she was gone and chatting away on her phone. Maybe she didn't have the base and height, we may never know. But I still wonder why we'd care that it was scalene. But what really made me wonder, why wonder, is that I thought, wow, I'm not exactly sure. And I've got a minor in math. Although none of those 7 or 8 college math classes involved geometry. In fact, the last time I did geometry was in the 9th grade, nearly 30 years ago. And that makes me feel a lot older than some kid asking me something simple sounding like what's the area of a scalene triangle.

Indeed. What's the area of my own triangle. My own scalene triangle. Heavy.

Geometry was confusing times. I should have applied myself just a little better than I did. Ah, high school.
