Behind The Mask
The Lyrics
Happy Birthday
enhanced
(© 1995, Daniel C. Eaglin)
1. The decades have flown by
And at the risk of sounding high:
How much longer will it be
Till they end your misery?
Do you think that you'll be missed
By all the girls you never kissed?
You can't miss what you never had
So maybe it won't be so bad.
Refrain:
You're one step closer to an early grave.
Grim reaper's on his way, perhaps you'd better behave.
Celebrate tonight with some chocolate cake and beer.
Your life's still moving forward but it's shorter by one year.
You know that things could be much worse
So you'd best stop feeling blue.
Still, you're not getting any younger.
Happy Birthday to you!
2. Do you think that you're not old?
Well this may sound a little bold
But no one else has been fooled.
Remember back when Elvis ruled?
See, you're just showing your age.
Your skin's another good gauge.
If you still can, have some fun.
Can't turn back time, what's done is done.
Bridge:
You can't change
Or rearrange
What life has dealt
The things you've felt
You hear a voice
You've got no choice
Another drink
Will help you think
What's the point
You light a joint
Make a plan
Take on the man
Is it too late
To become great
You've paid your dues
But you still lose
Can't change the past
You came in last
Another year
Another tear
Another birthday is here.
3. Regrets just make you mad.
Bitter dregs will make you sad.
You've already learned the truth.
It's kept hidden from our youth.
The disappointments of life
Will make you keep a sharpened knife.
Most folks don't know what they miss.
It's true that ignorance is bliss.
Mental Overdrive
(© 1995, Daniel C. Eaglin)
Refrain:
Feel the burn.
Feel the burn.
Tell me when you gonna learn.
Feel the pain.
Feel the pain.
The neurons frying in your brain.
See and hear the other side.
Control the powers long denied.
Riding high and so alive
Then crash from mental overdrive.
1. Do you know where you're going to?
Does your brain tell you what you should do?
There's so much to do and so little time.
If you can't justify it then don't do the crime.
Fifty million Elvis fans can't be wrong.
You can control every one with the beat of your song.
You're calling the shots but it's taking its toll.
How long can you last after selling your soul.
2. At the top you're one of the few.
Does the buzz in your head help you through?
You're doing the job of dozens of guys.
You still can't get a shake to go with your fries.
There's no time for you to sleep on the job.
There's no rest for the wicked when you're leading the mob.
The voices you hear whisper without a sound
You'll never grow old when you're cold in the ground.
Just Do It
(© 1995, Daniel C. Eaglin)
1. Don't you just hate it
When the man brings you down
Makes you feel like a jerk
Makes you feel like a clown
So you start working out
An elaborate scheme
That ends with a bang
And a blood-curdling scream
You'd have to be crazy
To go through with your plan
So you hold it inside
For as long as you can
And your bitterness grows
Till it drives you insane
You're convinced there's one way
To erase all the pain
Refrain:
Just do it.
You could end it all tonight.
Just do it.
It's so clear, you've seen the light.
You've got nothing to lose.
Get your face on the news.
You can make a big scene.
Show them all what you mean.
And just do it.
See you in the afterlife.
Just do it.
Love and death cut like a knife.
Many times you have planned
How you'd make your last stand.
Now it's all become clear.
Set aside all your fear.
And just do it.
2. They'll tell you you're wrong
You're a waste of good space
You've got the power
Put them all in their place
They'll remember your name
If your plan works out right
And if you're found out
Give the man a good fight
Some innocents may fall
You're not the one to blame
They may be better off
They may be glad you came
The effect may not last
But the man will think twice
When he ruins a life
With the toss of the dice
Hello, Euphoria
(© 1995, Daniel C. Eaglin)
Refrain:
Hello, euphoria,
Where you been?
I'm waitin' in the lobby
And I'd like to come in.
Don't try to run.
You've been hidin' too long.
Now that I've found you
This thing can't be wrong.
I won't be happy
With some old-fashioned bliss.
Come on, euphoria,
Give me all that I've missed.
Forget about Seattle
And that jive in L.A.
Tonight we're gonna party
And we'll do it my way.
1. Uptown, downtown
The lower east side.
You can make mine a double
And I'd like my cheese fried.
We'll hit the Oregon,
Visit all the best bars
Then McGuffey's for live music
Made by soon-to-be stars.
You've got to love it too
And by the look in your eyes
I'll kiss you on the lips
And I won't apologize.
2. Troubled mem'ries
Will all disappear.
Happy days are here again
Cause euphoria's near.
Sometimes it's in a cup
Or a capsule of herbs.
I'll go where I can get it
In the city of 'burbs.
If not for all the lows
Who could enjoy the brief highs?
So hit me with some high,
A euphoric surprise.
3. Burned out. Fed up.
Anticipation.
I've got to get that feeling.
Stop this alienation.
Ahh, there you are again.
Now that's hitting the spot.
I'll bet you're feeling it, too.
That's great stuff that you've got.
We'll start with steak and shrimp.
We'll be the toast of the town.
Let's dance the night away.
This time we'll never come down.
The Small Town Secrets Suite: Part 1, Dead Prom Queen
(© 1995, Daniel C. Eaglin)
1. She's wrapped in plastic,
Washed up on the shore.
Beloved by all,
She'll be loved evermore.
Her work with retarded kids
Gave parents hope
And her lessons in English
Helped foreigners cope.
She delivered hot meals
To elderly types
And patiently listened
To their elderly gripes.
But small towns hold secrets
And this girl had a few
Like the drugs that she took
And the men that she "knew".
On the outside all seemed to be
Beauty and light
But inside the dead prom queen
Waged a horrible fight.
Refrain:
Watch out for the evil in the woods
That surround a small town.
It's waiting right beneath the surface
To drag the weaker man down.
A small town's got its secrets
And the people have 'em too.
The prom queen had too many.
She died for what she knew.
2. The prom queen had a habit.
She liked getting coked.
Her boyfriend, Mr. Touchdown,
Kept her more than well stoked.
He dealt for crazy Leo
Who knew the prom queen well
And she had a secret boyfriend, James,
But she didn't want to tell.
The drug guys worked with Canucks
Who came across the border
And there are lots more people
To add to this disorder:
Like her parents -- they're quite wacky.
Her mom had special powers
And her dad would gladly sing and dance
To while away the hours.
Her best friend's named Donna.
The town's big shot is Ben.
And his girl's name is Audrey.
She's a teasing, sexpot ten.
Refrain:
These are some of the people that live
In this strange, special town.
There's evil right beneath the surface.
It drags the weaker man down.
A small town's got its secrets
And the people have 'em too.
The prom queen had too many.
She died for what she knew.
Bridge:
I'm here to help, I'm the FBI.
I'll solve this crime: the who & the why.
This girl had problems, but that's no excuse
For the source of this evil that's still on the loose.
I'm working close with the local law.
These friendly cops aren't bullies at all.
The clues are there. With a little time
We'll break the code and solve the crime.
3. She was nervous about meeting
Somebody called "J".
If this is a clue,
What's it mean, anyway?
Maybe One-Eyed Jack's
Where men go and girls work.
Maybe Leo Johnson,
He's one mean, violent jerk.
And what about this Bob?
Is he even real?
And why kill the prom queen?
She's got real strong appeal.
In a dream, FBI
Hears the killer's name.
But awake he's not sure
Exactly who to blame.
Now the prom queen is buried
Laid to rest in the ground
But the law won't stop searching
Till her killer is found.
Bridge:
My name is Bob, I'll do what I like.
My bud in crime is a fella named Mike.
He cut his arm off so he could no longer kill.
Now I'm working alone and I can't get my fill.
Through the darkness of future past the magician longs to see.
One chants out between two worlds, Fire, walk with me.
I'll catch you with my death bag. You may think I've gone insane.
But I promise from the heart, yes, I'll kill again.
Refrain:
So watch out for the evil in the woods
That surround a small town.
It's waiting right beneath the surface
To drag the weaker man down.
A small town's got its secrets
And the people have 'em too.
The prom queen had too many.
She died for what she knew.
4. To protect herself from Leo,
His wife got a gun.
She and Touchdown carried on,
Some guys have all the fun.
Leo got his drugs from Hank
Who just got parole.
Hank had murdered Andrew Packard
Who was both rich and old.
Now Touchdown wanted Leo
Removed from his life.
I think you'd understand
If you saw Leo's wife.
So Touchdown framed up Leo
And his pal Jacques
For the murder of the Prom Queen.
It seemed to be a lock.
5. The cops weren't the only ones
Working on the case.
There was Maddie, Prom Queen's cousin.
They had the same face.
Along with James and Donna
She searched her cousin's room.
They had to find the reason
The Prom Queen met her doom.
To impress FBI
Audrey snooped on her own.
A little undercovers work
Until her cover's blown.
The good, intrepid lawmen
Went hiking in the woods
Where the Log Lady promised
That her log knew the goods.
That night it saw 2 girls
And 3 suspicious guys.
Shut your eyes, burst into flame
But the log tells no lies.
Refrain:
Watch out for the evil in the woods
That surround a small town.
It's waiting right beneath the surface
To drag the weaker man down.
A small town's got its secrets
And the people have 'em too.
The prom queen had too many.
She died for what she knew.
6. People started dying
Or getting hurt real bad.
Shelly shot at Leo
Which only made him mad.
But before he'd pay her back
He went off to kill a bird.
The sheriff had this parrot
In hopes of what he'd heard.
Then back to get his Shelly
On the way to burn the mill.
Leo'd make her pay the price
For the hurt she caused him still.
Back home, Leo used an ax
To end poor Touchdown's life.
Sure, he'd left her at the mill
But Shell was still his wife.
Before he finished chopping,
Leo got shot once more.
Hank shot him through the window
To even an old score.
7. He made a real good suspect
So they lured Jacques to a trap.
But a sad, despondent Leland
Put him in an endless nap.
The two most likely perps
Could provide no more clues.
Leo was a vegetable.
Jacques death was old news.
Even with them out of action,
The case could not be shut.
Before the sun could rise
FBI's shot in the gut.
{Bong ... Bong ... Bong ... Bong ...}
There's a man in a smiling bag.
{Bong ... Bong ... Bong ... Bong ...}
The owls are not what they seem.
{Bong ... Bong ... Bong ... Bong ...}
Without chemicals, he points.
8. There were 3 guys that night
When the Prom Queen's soul was freed.
Two of them are useless.
It's the third who did the deed.
Bob would seem to be involved
But is he of this earth?
The One Armed Man is pointing.
will he help to end this search?
Leland's hands have killed
But as a father so distraught.
Ben Horne's life is filled with crime
But he hasn't been caught.
So Ben's the one arrested
And he languishes in jail.
But Bob's is not a presence
That's so easy to curtail.
The spree is not quite over
But some light can now be shed.
Bob's possessing Uncle Leland.
Now cousin Maddy is dead!
9. In the end it takes a vision
FBI is in a trance.
He's in a backwards room
Where a midget does a dance.
A girl who looks like Prom Queen
Says her daddy is the one.
He did it with his hands.
He didn't need a knife or gun.
Leland had an empty soul
Which let the evil in.
Then his sordid life of sex and drugs
And murder could begin.
Yet he had no self-awareness
Of the crimes at his own hand.
When his mind became aware
His life force left this earthly land.
It's the evil men do
That keeps Bob on the prowl.
Underneath all our sweetness
Hides the truth, oh so foul.
